PROFESSIONAL DRIVER LEARNERSHIP

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the driver learnership qualification is to ensure competent professional driving competence in the road transport sector, thus improving earning capacity of professional drivers as well as transport sector professionalism and economic growth.

Learners credited with this qualification are working, or intend working, in the commercial road transport industry as drivers. This qualification builds on vehicle driving competence, and credits competent drivers, who are driving vehicles carrying freight or passengers for commercial purposes.
The demand for this qualification lies primarily in the transport industry’s requirement for drivers to have employable competence beyond that of a basic driving license and professional driving permit.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 12

DURATION
12 months (1 year)

QUALIFICATION RULES:
Minimum 122 credits
All the Fundamental Component Unit Standards are compulsory – 36 credits.
All the Core Component Unit Standards are compulsory – 30 credits.
For the Elective Component learners are required to attain at least 56 credits out of 263 possible credits, including at least one of the following:
> 123254: ‘Operate a vehicle combination’, 20 credits.
> 123253: ‘Operate a rigid heavy vehicle’, 15 credits. (gross vehicle mass above 3,5 tons)
> 123257: ‘Operate a rigid light vehicle’, 10 credits. (gross vehicle mass below 3,5 tons)

HOW

The theory training is completed in 50 days. (2,5 months)
Workplace experience at the employer premises – 9 months

Please note:
The learner’s portfolio should prove that the learner has accumulated at least 100 logged hours of driving which includes the following compulsory conditions:
– Night driving – at least 5 hours.
– Driving in wet weather conditions – at least 5 logged hours.
– Freeway driving – at least 20 logged hours.
– Driving in low and high-density traffic – at least 20 logged hours.
It is the duty of the employer to supply opportunities for the learners to drive on the employer’s vehicles to accumulate driving hours.

WHEN

Learnerships can start any month of the year but the duration is 12 months.

MANAGEMENT OF LEARNERSHIP

He and She Driver Training Centre will manage all theory training, and formative- and summative assessments.
He and She will manage internal moderation and will apply for external moderation by TETA seta.
He and She staff will manage all learner registration on TETA database, upload competencies, compiling of Progress reports and manage learner logbooks.
He and She staff will manage all tranche claims for Discretionary grants.
He and She staff will assist in the recruitment of candidates for the learnership programmes at no extra cost.
He and She will manage applications for the certification of learners.

Since 2016, He and She Driver Training Centre has successfully trained 190 unemployed learners for Pindulo VDM. Learners who completed the program have acquired full qualification in terms of the National Certificate Professional Driving: SAQA ID 50285.
