First Aid in the workplace

It is the duty and responsibility of all businesses to ensure that employees are not exposed to health or safety risks arising from their work activities or business undertakings. Accidents do happen in the work place and therefor First Aiders need to be on the premises to ensure that the injury is treated. Performing First Aid acts can be dangerous if the employee is not trained to perform First Aid in the workplace.
Understanding the different types of injuries (burns, fractures, cuts, impact) the First Aider can assist while the proper medial assistance is on the way. Often injuries are treated in the wrong way and an lead to long term damage or even death.

More about the First Aid course

Research through workplace inspection has shown that a surprising amount of small businesses (SMME) do not have the correct required amount of First Aiders, their certificates are expired or they do not meet the minimum quota First Aiders per shift. Occupational Health and Safety Amendment Act, No. 181 Of 1993 states that by law a certain amount of Fire Fighters, First Aiders and HSE (Health safety and Environmental) representatives are required on the premises. Although businesses are not always fined on the spot when they do not meet these requirements, its is always after a disaster that hefty fines are handed out and normally a loss of lives.

Injuries are never a planned event but should your business have a work place related injury it is desirable to have First Aiders on hand to deal with the situation before it becomes out of hand. By understanding the different types of injuries and what lead to the injury, First Aiders will know how to quickly deal with the situation and secure the patient till the right medical care can be administered.
