BECOMING A SAFER ROAD USER FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU
Other areas that are also discussed in this course are: Driver fatigue, Common Causes of Accidents, Eye lead time, Lane discipline and Communicating with other drivers on the road and making sure that they are aware of you.
Delegates are required to have a valid drivers licence and 2 years of driving experience. This system is not intended for driver "refreshment" or practicing driving on the public roads. This course is aimed at improving experienced drivers by expanding on their driving experience and minimizing bad driving habits that has been acquired over their years of driving.
Should you require to have a PrDP for your job, make sure that your PrDP is up to date. We may not assess a driver should your PrDP be expired or revoked. Your Defensive and Economical Driving Certificate will not be issued should your PrDP be expired.
Please note that we advise to use the delegate's vehicle for the practical training as every vehicle has its own characteristics.

Defensive and Economical Driving
Defensive and Economical Driving is a system that has been adopted from the United States of America and adapted to be applied on the roads of South Africa. The system looks at key areas such as vehicle empathy, fuel consumption, keeping yourself out of danger and communicating with other road users to make sure they see you and are aware of your actions.
Communication with other road users is a very important aspect of your trip to your next destination. Being able to predict other road users actions or communicate your intentions is vital to being a safe road user. Often accidents happen because drivers did not expect that action from the vehicle that they are in a collision with. Being able to predict what the vehicles around you are doing, a driver can move out of the danger zone and into a state where they have an escape or alternative direction to exit.
The changing in driving conditions be it rain, wind, road surface or visibility requires drivers to adjust their driving style. Often we see drivers who do not slow down during wind or rain which leads to horrible accidents. The Defensive and Economical Driving System highlights and explains the impact different driving conditions has on one's visibility and also the negative effect on the vehicle driveability.
Over the years the system has been developed, improved and reviewed to adjust to changing driving trends and also the technology improvements in vehicles. The braking system such as ABS (Antilock Braking System), the Electronic Power-Steering System (EPS) and Stability Control System (Electronic Stability Program ESP) is also discussed in the course so drivers know how they work and that they can understand how the vehicles react in certain situations. Other important aspects such as Under-Steer and Over-Steer is also discussed in the course.
The Defensive and Economical Driving System has been developed to fit into 5 key areas so that it is easy to recall each key and use it in conjunction with making decisions and adjusting one's driving style.
By applying the 5 keys of Defensive and Economical Driving, one can be sure to always be safe and ready to react should the driving situation/conditions change. The 5 keys also help to keep yourself in a safe driving space and minimise the chance of being in an unsafe driving situation.
Defensive and Economical Driving Assessment
After completing the course, the delegate is required to return after 4 weeks to do their practical assessment. This is done to ensure that the Defensive driving system has become part of their habits when driving a vehicle.
Combining Defensive and Economical Driving with other courses.
Defensive and Economical Driving is a great course to be combined with other courses such as Anti Hijack, Gravel Road Driving, Collision Avoidance and Driver Rehabilitation Programs (when a driver has been in a serious accident or hasn't been behind the wheel for a long period of time).
Some clients make use of our combination "Advanced Driving Course" which is a few courses put together and consists of Defensive and Economical Driving, Gravel Road Driving, Map Reading, 4x4 and K53 Refresher Training. These courses are tailor-made to cover all the aspects of their driver's duties.
Defensive and Economical Driving Re-certification
The Defensive and Economical Driving course is valid for 2 years. Once the certificate has expired drivers are required to attend a 2-hour re-certification briefing which is accompanied by a re-certification assessment.
The instructor will briefly cover all the important aspects and then take the driver to the road to ensure that they still apply the Defensive and Economical Driving system.
Should the driver then pass the assessment he/she will be presented with a new certificate valid for 2 years.
Should he/she fail, then the driver is required to re-attend the full Defensive and Economical Driving course.
